  1. According to published history, John was a member of the "Working Class Union", who opposed World War I. He took a very active part in The Green Corn Rebellion, which took place in 1917 in rural Oklahoma. The Green Corn Rebellion was a popular uprising of poor farmers who identified with the Socialist Party. John was known as "Old Man" Spears.

August 3, 1917, a meeting was held at John's farm to plan an uprising. The uprising failed, as they were no match for the posses. In the weeks that followed, several members were arrested, and put on trial. John, along with his sons, Alonzo and Walter, and sonn-law, Robert. C. Boggs, were sentenced to serve time in Leavenworth Prison. The length of the sentence each received varies in accounts of the story.

I have copies of the prison mugshot pictures of John and his son, Alonzo. I also have copies of numerous newspaper accounts of their actions, arrests and sentencing. All of these were shared by Sharon Dean.
